I bought this tutorial package to see if it could help me. It's really great. I'm finding out things that I didn't know was possible. The demonstrations are simple to follow. It takes you through each step by showing you and talking to you about how and where things are done. Best of all it has an excellent parental control section and now I can keep tabs on my kids MSN and surfing habits. its also always handy if I ever run into problems. Highly recommended!"

This set offers great training for a beginner, but first thing to mention, it is the most inexpensive way to get certified. The video teaches command line workflow and exams ask smart practical questions. The training is organized in logical groups of short lessons. It is not a Hollywood movie; to follow this training you need typing the commands, reading man pages, learn options etc. The training is very practical. I was reading few books on Linux command prompt before; none of them offer this level of practical engagement and intensity. One thing is reading, another thing is life demonstration and exams reinforce self-confidence. You also get a contact email for training questions. To their credit, UNIX Academy answered all my questions with great attention.
I've been using various Linux flavors (Fedora, Slakware, PCLINUX, and later Ubuntu) for 8 months. This training gets you to a terminal window, to command prompt and teaches you many commands. You get three attempts for each exam included in the price. I passed first part with first attempt, second and third parts required two attempts and I used all three attempts for the final fourth exam. My certificates arrived in two weeks in large envelope. If you are in a mood for learning this is great!

Let me start by saying that I regularly review security software for Amazon, as I have many friends that require this "protection" and I've pretty much used them all by now.

The one(s), however, that have found themselves on my laptop are Kaspersky (and ESET NOD32) simply because of their sheer brilliance.

Let's talk about the Kaspersky in a bit more detail now:

1. It is very very good in what it's supposed to do. The virus definitions get updated daily and its scanning facility is one of the best around. Like NOD32, but to a lesser extent, it is very good in detecting Trojans and other dangerous malware and spyware before a "signature" has been created for them.
2. Installation is straightforward, yet it requires a number of reboots and online registrations.
3. The makers of Kaspersky have decluttered the main screen of earlier versions. Much more intuitive and user-friendly in v11, I have to say.
4. Clear and real-time protection, much like any other AV, but in a way that makes you feel safe and secure whilst using it.

Only one disadvantage relative to other AVs. It does feel as if my laptop is running that bit slower compared with when it had McAfee on it or even NOD32, especially during the booting of the system.

Overall, one to have certainly on a powerful desktop if you want absolute security from everything dangerous out there.

The independent testing labs have nothing but praise for Kaspersky Antivirus 2011. West Coast Labs and ICSA Labs both certify it for virus detection and cleanup; West Coast gives it additional checkmark certifications including detection of Trojans and general malware. The most up-to-date Kaspersky technology has also passed all of the last ten VB100 tests by Virus Bulletin.

Based on user feedback, the company has also toned down the user interface for the 2011 edition. The main window used to be buzzing with multi-coloured icons representing different security components. Now it includes just a handful of aesthically-pleasing, simple and discreet but nevertheless clear icons.

In terms of virus protection, it also offers easy installation and helpful support features and is specifically designed to install even on malware-infested systems. Rescue Disks can also be downloaded directly from Kaspersky or users can try the no-installation Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool. Installation was no trouble on my PC and full system scans are achieved quickly. There are also bonus system tuning and privacy features. All of this being the case, and having tried a huge range of anti-virus programmes in my time thanks to the Vine programme, I can't find any reason not to recommend Kaspersky 2011 as one of the very best currently available.

I've used Kaspersky on and off for the last few years, and my experiences have generally been good ones. However, previous versions of their AV software have been a little top heavy, used too many resources, and slowed down some other applications. I had read good reviews of the 2011 package, but having already tried and been very disappointed by the Kaspersky 2011 Internet Suite, I was more than a little sceptical. I was wrong. This package is spot on, and runs smoothly and effectively. Best of all, it doesn't hog resources so much, and doesn't seem to hinder other applications that are running simultaneously. As an AV package, it is extremely effective, identifying more problems (or potential threats) than any version of any software I have used to date. I would definitely recommend this software for it's effectiveness, price, and because it is so easy to live with. Updates are automatic, and very quick, as are the regular scans. Let's hope Kaspersky keep up the good work!

With the ridiculous price of MS Office 2010 and the dreadful, hated ribbon interface, OpenOffice (OO) makes great sense. If you have previously used MS Office 2000 or Office 2003 then it will not take long to get to grips with OO.

The familiar menu interface is there and very similar to the old Office interface. Some of the functions are slightly different and setting up landscape pages works differently but it is quite easy to set up very professional documents using this software.

The commonly used apps e.g. word processor, spreadsheet and presentation graphics work fine and are in most respects compatible with MS Office. OO can also save in MS formats .doc, .xls and .ppt and there is also the database (which I don't use). There is a PDF export function built in which works BETTER than MS Office 2010 version in that it saves PDF bookmarks.

I have now got OO set up with templates and the same shortcut keys I used in MS Office and it works fine. In fact, people are stunned at the visual quality of my work when I tell them I used a piece of FREE software! In most respects my work in OO is indistinguishable from docs producted using Word 2010.

It is extremely unlikely that I will ever buy another copy of MS office again!

If you want it on CD this is fine and quite cheap, but I have just downloaded it from the OpenOffice website.

I am thrilled with this fantastic value package. I had been using Microsoft Works and needed to upgrade yet I was completely put off by the price of Word for the small use I have. Firstly I tried the free download of Open Office but it took a long time and Internet Explorer cut it off after three hours! I therefore sent for the C Rom and a disc drive as my netbook does not have one. Both arrived promptly and I installed the package within minutes even though I am a complete novice at the whole business. I am very pleased with the word processor and spreadsheet functions and it seems to me to have all you would expect from such a package. It deserves much wider recognition.
One year later: I am still using this for my writing and poems and have realised that it does say it will save in versions of Word - which seems to be what editors want - as well as other formats. I must confess I have not yet mastered this aspect.

Linspire is a version of Linux that is designed to be as user friendly as possible. If you have been using Microsoft Windows you will have little difficulty making the change.

The system, and the number of free applications that come with it or can be obtained is ideally suited to home, school or small business use. Note that documents created in Microsoft applications can be read by Open Office, meaning that you can transfer work from home to office without having to worry about compatability.

A very significant advantage of Linspire/linux is the abscence of any problems with viruses, spyware and similar nuisances. Cost also must be considered - it is minimal compared with Microsoft products and the neccessary anti-viral defences.

A disadvantage will be finding a printer that will work with linux; HP printers seem to the best prepared for linux.

It is possible to test drive the system for free, using the Live! CD without making any changes at all to your own computer. It is also perfectly feasible to have Linspire and Windows on the one computer and to switch between the two.

Technical support is very good, both directly from Linspire and through the forum of other users.

Linspire is a great alternative OS. It will appeal to the type of individual that can sit in front of any computer and start working regardless of which type of OS is installed.

Of course Linux has been around a few years now and has often been referred to as the OS that computer geeks use. Linspire is the OS that I and many others have been waiting for. A Linux with the ease of use that we are used to on MS windows.

Sick and tired battling malicious software as well as the cost of software you need. Linspire's approach is a good one. For a start you get the basic package that includes all the software you need to get started including an office suite of programs (Open Office) compatible with industry standard MS Office 'word' and 'excel' are two examples. Lets not quibble too much on this however, Open Office delivers the killer punch or if you like two. Its free and is available across the three major platforms Linux, Mac and of course Windows. You need never look with envy at an MS Office windows user again.

The one major feature you may like is the Click and Run (CNR) facility. You don't go out and buy software for this OS. You simply click and connect to the CNR warehouse which provides you with a choice of 3000 or so software titles all of which are open source most of which are free to download CNR yearly subscription charges apply but this is cheap and the choice is yours. To help you make your mind up browse to Linspire.com there you will find all the answers you need if you are considering the switch from Windows.

A downside is the lack of Web cam support in this current version. Though I am confident that this and other shortfalls that have prevented others from making the switch will be put right in version 6. I know one thing it won't cost me anything to upgrade. Look forward to watching all those XP users queueing up for the Vista launch.
